Biofuel production and other alternative fuel updates.
Jun. 29–BP today burnished its green credentials for the second time in a week by sinking Pounds 56 million into a new Pounds 80 million biodiesel venture. Just days after unveiling a Pounds 200 million joint venture with Associated British Foods to make biodiesel from low-grade wheat, BP is teaming up with small quoted company D1 Oils to grow jatropha on plantations in India, Indonesia, China and southern Africa. Biodiesel is extracted from the inedible fruit of the jatropha, which D1 says is grown on scrubland and therefore, unlike other biofuels, does not displace arable land for food crops. Shares in D1 leapt 24p to an 11-month high of 265p. “This is a transforming event for D1 and a significant endorsement by BP of our strategy,” said D1 chief executive Elliott Mannis, a former finance director of Anglian Water.
