Sep. 24–INDIANA INNOVATOR: Chris Limcaco. His patent: Chris Limcaco, president of Algaewheel, 1426 W. 29th St., Suite 206, is shown with the Algaewheel, a wastewater- treatment system that uses algae and bacteria combined with sunlight to clean wastewater and create biodiesel and organic fertilizers. — CHARLIE NYE / The Star Company: Algaewheel. Location: 1426 W. 29th St., Suite 206, Indianapolis. The invention: Algaewheel is an ecological wastewater treatment system that uses algae to create biodiesel and organic fertilizers. The process uses algae and bacteria with solar energy to rid wastewater of solids. Amount of money invested: $3.5 million. How you got the idea for the invention: “The idea began as an ecosystem for aquatic life support. The fundamental principle was to emulate the natural habitat which provided a balanced ecosystem for all aquatic life forms,” said Tony Hodge, a partner at Algaewheel. “While developing the technology, Chris Limcaco was designing and building wastewater treatment plants and became increasingly frustrated with the inefficient and inherent failures of conventional systems. We implemented the same technology that sustained the delicate balance of aquatic life to clean wastewater.” Where the product is available: www. algaewheel.com. Do you have other patents? Three patents for the technology, and one is pending.
